Pre-Linnaean existence permitted a certain taxonomic indeterminacy: a world in which morphology had not yet been made synonymous with identity. With Microcosmos (1996) as an oblique point of departure, Thallus treats magnification as a taxonomic disturbance, unsettling ontological certitude. Its logic belongs less to scientific classification than to the older territories of bestiary, herbal lore and chthonic cosmology, where empiricism and mythos had not yet become mutually exclusive.
